Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III
According to the Sultan, the country should
focus on rebuilding the socio-economic life of
people, particularly those who live in the
Northeast where terrorism thrives.
The Nation reports that Abubakar expressed
his opinion on Tuesday, November 17, after
he was installed as the chancellor of the
University of Ibadan at the institution’s 67th
Foundation Day in the Oyo state capital.
Speaking about the deplorable state of socio-
economic life in the region, the Sultan noted
that there were more than 2.5 million out-of-
school children (popularly called Almajiri) in
some states in the North.
According to Abubakar, poor socio-economic
factors help terrorism thrive because young
people are not gainfully engaged and their
minds are not developed.
To tackle insurgency in Nigeria, the Sultan
said that the country must focus on
increasing school enrollment, training youths
in acquisition of skills and providing
opportunities for skilled labour.
Stressing that terrorism has nothing to do
with Islam, Abubakar described terrorists as
“deluded individuals who are hiding under
religion to perpetrate evil”.
In his opinion, the University of Ibadan
should train youths in character building and
conduct researches that can expose practical
steps in dealing with society’s challenges.
Reading the valedictory speech of the
outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac
Adewole, the acting VC, Prof. Ayelari
Emilolorun, noted that the university awarded
456 doctorate degrees from 12 faculties and
institutes this year. He stressed that his
administration was focused on staff welfare,
infrastructural development and security to
enable the university deliver on its mandate
of quality training and research.
.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari,
who was represented at the event by Vice
President Yemi Osinbajo, stressed the need to
move energy source thermal to solar. He
added that the government has agreements
with some companies in the United Kingdom
to achieve solar energy production.
He also noted that there were plans for self-
sustenance in rice production to achieve food
security instead of relying on importation.
The president called on universities to be
sensitive to developments around the world,
key into them as they can make better
impact on life of Nigerians.
