A man convicted rape on the basis of a dream
has walked free after 28 years behind bars.
A judge overturned Clarence Moses-El’s rape
conviction after nearly three decades, saying he
would more than likely be found innocent if the
case returned to court.
The victim originally named someone else when
asked who’d attacked her but later said Mr
Moses-El’s face came to her in a dream.
Following his release, he told reporters outside
the prison in Denver, Colorado: “This is the
moment of my life, right here.
“I’m at a loss for words. I just want to get home
to my family.”
He has campaigned to prove his innocence for
years and his battle even brought about changes
to the law requiring authorities to preserve DNA
evidence – after key swabs and clothing were
discarded.
His fight appeared to be over in 2008 when the
Colorado governor successfully fought a legal
challenge to grant him a new trial.
Mr Moses-EL said his spirituality and innocence
kept him going in prison.
At the beginning of the case, the assault victim
first named a man who said he had sex with her,
then she said Mr Moses-EL’s face came to her in
a dream.
But in 2013, Mr Moses-El received a letter from
LC Jackson in which he admitted he had had sex
with the victim on that night in 1987, but claimed
it was consensual – triggering the re-opening of
the case.
