An elderly Florida man said he killed his
wife because she was in pain and he
couldn’t afford medicine.
William Hager, an 86-year-old in Port St.
Lucie, told police that he shot his wife
Carolyn in the head with a Colt .32
revolver as she slept, according to an
arrest affidavit.
The officer who arrived at the home to
hear Hager’s “bad news” said the
husband apologized for letting his
daughters know before calling 911.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said
Tuesday that Carolyn Hager, 78, had
been sick with multiple illnesses for
years.
Hager told police that his wife had
previously told him she wanted to die,
but never asked him to end her life.
He said that he could no longer afford to
buy the medication that she needed, and
had been thinking about killing his
longtime companion for several days.
A sheriff’s deputy told TC Palm that
Hager showed remorse and “was very
clear that he was out of options in his
mind.”
The pair, who a neighbor said were avid
gardeners, had been married for more
than 50 years.
Hager has been charged with first-
degree murder, and is currently being
held without bond.
