A
judge ruled that Robert Lewis Dear, who murdered three people and
wounded nine others at a Planned Parenthood in November 2015, is not
mentally stable enough to stand trial for the second time. Judge Gilbert
Martinez first found Dear incompetent in May, when he was found unfit
the first time he called the judge a "filthy animal.”
TheDenverPost.com reports,
during Dear's first court appearances in December, he displayed
questionable behavior in court by yelling out, “I am guilty, there will
be no trial, I am a warrior for the babies.” In a jailhouse interview in
February, he revealed to the Colorado Gazette he was guilty of the
killings: “I killed three and saved 3,000 babies.” A detective who
testified in the preliminary reported that Dear said “no more baby
parts” when he was arrested after the murders.
Judge Martinez found Dear incompetent in May after two state
psychologists testified that he has a delusional disorder that has
affected him for decades. He believes the federal government has been
spying on him because he called a radio station in 1993, after a raid in
Waco, Texas. The delusion, the psychologists said, is keeping him from
being able to withstand a trial or defend himself.Martinez decided on Thursday that Dear is still not fit to stand trial. He wasn’t present for the hearing, with his attorneys telling the judge that he is not fit to participate in motions hearings either. That could be due to his multiple comments in the courtroom: at his last competency hearing in May, the Denver Post reported at the time, he twisted his head to face the gallery and yelled, “Anybody want to know why I did it?”
