The New York City Police Sergeant, Kizzy Adonis,
has been charged internally by the New York
Police Department with failure to supervise. She
has also had her gun and badge stripped,
according to recent reports. The charge
contributed to Adonis is in connection to Eric
Garner, he black man who died after being
placed in a choke hold by police officials in New
York.
Eric Garner's death in 2014 captured national
media attention and is the reason behind the "I
Can't Breathe" movement that swept through the
nation, spawning several marches and protests.
While being apprehended by NYPD officers,
Garner stated that he couldn't breathe numerous
times. His cries were ignored and he was later
pronounced dead at a New York hospital.
According to USA Today, Sgt. Adonis, who joined
the NYPD in 2002, who was a supervising officer
on the scene at the time of the incident. She was
quoted in an internal NYPD report as saying, "the
perpetrator's condition did not seem serious and
he did not appear to get worse."
Adonis was not initially on the scene during the
incident but joined the response after hearing on
her radio about developments. "She chose to go
there to help out and look what happens,"
Sergeants Benevolent Association president Sgt.
Ed Mullins told the Los Angeles Times. "This
incident stems from failed (NYPD) policies that
ultimately led to the death of Eric Garner."
In December 2014 a grand jury declined to
indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo, the officer involved
in the death of Eric Garner.
